Used Car Buying Checklist: 15 Things to Check Before You Pay

Before you hand over any money for a used car, work through this checklist. It will not replace a professional inspection, but it will help you spot obvious problems and avoid the worst deals.

Paperwork checks

1. V5C logbook — Check the seller's name and address match. Make sure the VIN on the document matches the car. A missing V5C is a red flag.
2. MOT history — Check the full history free at gov.uk. Look for recurring advisories, mileage jumps, or gaps that suggest the car was off the road.
3. Service history — Stamped service book or invoices. Gaps in servicing can mean missed cambelt changes or ignored problems.
4. HPI check — Run a vehicle history check for outstanding finance, write-off status, stolen markers, and mileage discrepancies.

Visual inspection

5. Bodywork — Look along the panels from a low angle. Ripples, colour differences, or overspray suggest accident repair. Run a finger along panel gaps — they should be even.
6. Tyres — Check tread depth (minimum 1.6mm legal, 3mm recommended). Uneven wear suggests alignment or suspension problems.
7. Under the bonnet — Look for oil leaks, corroded battery terminals, coolant colour (should be clean, not brown), and the condition of hoses and belts.
8. Underneath the car — Crouch down and check for rust on sills, subframe, and exhaust. Surface rust is normal; structural rust is expensive.

Running checks

9. Cold start — Always see the car started from cold. A warm engine hides starting problems. Listen for rattles, knocks, or excessive smoke.
10. Dashboard lights — When you turn the key to ignition, all warning lights should illuminate briefly. If any are missing, the bulb may have been removed.
11. Clutch — The biting point should be somewhere in the middle of travel. Very high or very low means the clutch is wearing out.
12. Gears — Every gear should select smoothly without crunching. Reverse is often the first to show problems.

Test drive

13. Brakes — The car should stop straight without pulling to one side. Listen for grinding or squealing.
14. Steering — Should be smooth with no vibration or wandering. On a straight road, the car should track straight with hands off the wheel briefly.
15. Motorway speed — If possible, take the car above 50mph. Vibrations, wind noise, and high-speed handling problems only show up at speed.
